Havana, Feb 14 (Prensa Latina)
As satisfactory was termed the defense at 11th
Circuit of the Court of Appeals in Atlanta of the
five Cuban anti-terrorists jailed in the US.
Roberto Gonzalez Sewherert,
attorney and brother of a defendant, told the
Cuban TV National News Cast that the Judges did
not take them by surprise and they did a fine job.
Yet the public prosecutor
remained silent when repeatedly asked on the
guarantees for a fair trial and the measures
adopted to ensure the rights of the defendants.
The hearing also unveiled the
US Administration's efforts to block respect for
the defendants that facilitated the hostile
climate that prevailed along the trial.
Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon
Labanino, Rene Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero and
Fernando Gonzalez were detained on Sep 1998 for
monitoring terrorist groups operating from Miami.
They were submitted to a
biased, unfair trial that ruled four life
sentences plus 75 years behind bars.
After the haring, US
solidarity groups and attorneys gave a press
conference in Atlanta and the local university
will host a support rally.
A panel of three Judges from
the Atlanta Circuit annulled the sentences against
the Cuban Five they ruled illegal and arbitrary
but the District Attorney requested a revision
last October.
The Feb 14 hearing was
attended by lawyers, legislators and other
personalities from Germany, Belgium, Italy,
Argentina, Puerto Rico, the UK and the US.
