HAVANA,
Sept. 13 (PL). — Thousands of people in the world are
participating today in a renewed campaign on behalf of the
Cuban Five, the anti-terrorist fighters imprisoned in the
United States after a markedly political trial.
The
previous day, on the ninth anniversary of the arrest of
Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino, René
González and Fernando González, grassroots demonstrations
and initiatives demanding their freedom were reported in 50
countries.
They were
given prison sentences ranging from 15 years to two life
terms after thwarting crimes against humanity organized
against their country by extreme right-wing anti-Cuban
forces based in Miami, Florida.
On the
first day of this renewed campaign for the Cuban Five, as
they are known among their supporters around the world,
particularly important actions took place in the United
States led by the National Committee to Free the Five.
It was
reported that the celebrated actor Danny Glover sent a
message saying that the Five were sentenced to unusual and
cruel punishment for exercising their moral obligation to
defend themselves.
The United
States failed to prevent deadly terrorist attacks repeatedly
launched from its own territory for many decades against the
sovereign nation of Cuba, Glover noted.
And
reports were coming in from many other countries, including
the Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay,
Mexico, Angola, Brazil, Peru, Puerto Rico, Lebanon, Italy,
Ukraine, Russia, Japan, China and the Philippines, regarding
the reinvigoration of the movement in solidarity with these
five Cubans.
