Lebanese President Meets Cuban Vice President

Beirut, Jan 14 (Prensa Latina) Lebanese President Emile Lahoud and Cuban Council of Ministers Vice President Jose Ramon Fernandez examined the situation in their countries and the Middle East.

Lahoud and Fernandez, who briefed the host on President Fidel Castro´s invitation to visit Havana whenever he thinks fit, shared similar positions and views.

Cuban Ambassador to Beirut Dario de Urra Torriente accompanied Fernandez in his intensive activities.

On Thursday, the Caribbean delegation held talks with Prime Minister Omar Karame and Mahmoud Hammoud and Adnan Wafic Kassar, ministers of Foreign Affairs and Immigrants, and Economy and Trade, respectively.

Cubans also exchanged with Emile Lahoud, deputy and chairman of the Parliamentary Commission for Youth and Sports Affairs.

Key issues such as solidarity with the Arab cause, the condemnation of war and the complex situation created by continuous Zionist attacks on Palestinians topped their agenda.

Before closing Thursday’s agenda, Fernandez informed his Lebanese counterparts of the Battle of Ideas here, the situation of the five Cubans imprisoned in the US and the solidarity they receive, among other topics.

Participants sent sincere greetings to Fidel Castro and wished him a quick and full recovery.

Castro rejects foreign interference in Lebanon
Cuba desires stronger bilateral relations

BEIRUT: Cuban leader Fidel Castro said Thursday that Cuba "supported Lebanon's unity and territorial integrity and strongly rejected foreign interference in Lebanon's internal affairs."

In a verbal message relayed to President Emile Lahoud by visiting Cuban Deputy Premier Jose Ramon Fernandez Alvarez, the Cuban leader expressed Cuba's "desire to develop bilateral relations between both countries." Lahoud, in turn saluted Cuba's supportive stand and informed Castro that "the Lebanese state was determined to consolidate national unity ... and see an implementation of all UN resolutions to achieve peace in the Middle East."

Alvarez also visited Prime Minister Omar Karami at the Grand Serail. Discussions touched on ways to coordinate efforts in both countries to find a way to face "constant pressure being applied by the United States." Alvarez denounced the "immoral and unfair war on Iraq, and Israeli aggressions against the Palestinian and

"We are all against terrorism," he added. Alvarez said discussions also focused on future conferences in June in Qatar and on the 14th Summit of the Non-Aligned Nations expected to be held in Cuba. Lahoud and Karami also met with visiting Cypriot Foreign Minister George Iacovou, who conveyed his country's commitment to developing bilateral ties with Lebanon.
