INTRODUCTION:
The Higher Institute of Art
(ISA, because of its letters in Spanish) was founded in July 29, 1976, where
before 1959 was located the exclusive "Havana Country Club", in Cubanacan
neighborhood. It belongs to the Ministry of Culture and is the only University
for arts in the country, also a unique institution in Latin America.
Relevant personalities of
Cuban culture has participated in its artistic and pedagogic projects, such as
Mario Rodríguez Alemán, Argeliers León, Harold Gramatges, Alicia Alonso,
Fernando Alonso, Raquel Revuelta, Ramiro Guerra, Leo Brouwer, Alfredo Guevara,
Graziella Pogolotti, Rita Longa, among others. ISA is very proud to have given
Academic degrees to important figures of International art, like for example:
Alex Rosemberg, Peter Ludwig, Oswaldo Guayasamín, Eugenio Barba y Antonio Gades.
Relevant figures of today's Cuban art were graduated at ISA, such as Zenaida
Castro Romeu, Roberto Fabelo, Rey Guerra, Luis Alberto García, Corina Mestre,
List Alfonso, Loipa Araujo, among many many others.
COURSES,
POSTGRADUATED STUDIES AND EVENTS:
The academic structure of
the school is formed by 4 Faculties (Media, Communications and Audiovisual Arts,
Performing Arts, Visual Arts and Music), 5 careers (Audiovisual Communication,
Theatre, Dances, Visual Arts and Music) and 39 specialties inside careers, 24 of
them as advanced studies from the national system of education and 15 unique for
higher level.
At the same time, ISA
offers Postgraduate studies, Master Degrees, Courses, Training and a Doctorate
in Sciences for Arts, all of them given by the same Faculties plus 3
Departments: Pedagogy and Psychology, Linguistic Studies and Cuban Studies. In
July every year, ISA offers many courses at the "University Summer" project,
with great acceptance of foreign students and low costs.
Besides, along the course
year, ISA organizes the following events, as part of its pedagogic
procedure:
- Scientific Conference on Arts and Culture Research,
international event every two years.
- Latin American and Caribbean
Meeting on Teaching Art, in January every two years.
- Elsinor,
Performing Arts Festival, in June every year..
- Imago, Festival and
Course of the Faculty of Media, Communications and Audiovisual Arts, in November
every two years.
- Virtual Reality, yearly event of the Faculty of
Media, Communications and Audiovisual Arts and the Department of Esthetic and
Philosophy.
- International Meeting of Professors and Students of
Visual Arts, yearly event of the Faculty of Visual Arts.
