Havana, July 14 (RHC)-- Popular Cuban musician Compay
Segundo has died at the age of 95. His health had deteriorated over the
past several months as he suffered from an acute metabolic disorder and
kidney malfunction.
Born Francisco Repilado, Compay Segundo gained fame with
the Grammy award-winning Buena Vista Social Club project, sponsored by
Cuban Juan de Marcos González and U.S. guitarist Ry Cooder, which won a
Grammy award in the year 1998. In 2001, he received another nomination
from the U.S. National Association of Recording Arts and Sciences for a
recording of a song entitled "Las flores de la vida" (The Flowers of
Life).
Known as the oldest performing musician in the world,
his age did not keep him from playing on the world's most important
stages, and he even sang his famous "Chan Chan" for Pope John Paul II, who
personally requested the song.
Compay Segundo was buried on Monday in his hometown,
Santiago de Cuba. Havana, July 14 (RHC)
